Family.Wellness.Pongal-Podcast

The Wellness Initiative for Thamizhar’s Thirunaal Festival 2026 proposes opening the festival (to be held on January 15, 2026) with a strong focus on working Tamil women, recognizing how they balance work, family, finances, and the preservation of culture, often at the cost of their own health. Inspired by the real challenge of diabetes among working mothers, the initiative links cultural celebration with health awareness.

The programme highlights the weekday Pongal tradition, modestly celebrated at home before or after work, sustained mainly by women. This authentic practice serves as the foundation for a 14-hour live Pongal Podcast (6:00 am–8:00 pm), divided into 15-minute to 30-minute segments, where families share their real-life Pongal moments while continuing with their daily responsibilities.

Medical professionals will share practical guidance on healthy living and diabetes management through lifestyle changes, promoting sustainable habits rather than relying on long-term medical interventions. Dr Vanaja Kalaichelvan will conduct three dedicated segments focusing solely on healthy living and overcoming diabetes among women.

The remaining segments will be open to families, medical professionals, and potential MediaCorp and regional (neighbouring countries) participation, ensuring inclusivity and broad reach. A tech-savvy youth team will be essential to curate participants, train them in podcasting, coordinate the full-day programme, and develop the overall script.

Overall, the initiative integrates culture, wellness, women’s contributions, and youth leadership, positioning healthy living as a core pillar of the community’s life journey.
